Is It Time To Make That Change?

Have you ever thought about making a change in your life?

I have just embarked on a major change in my life.

This month I have finally said goodbye to my teaching career after 26 years. As you can imagine it is a time of mixed emotions – sadness at leaving a fantastic team of people and of course the children who have always been a pleasure to teach (well most of them anyway!) But also happiness and excitement that I am finally getting to focus 100% on my passion which is helping people, empowering people, to make change in their lives.

Now this also comes with a healthy dose of fear, of negativity.

I have that little critical voice in my head, that little metaphorical chimp, or ‘the shitty committee’ which I have also heard it described as (and actually I quite like that description!).

“What if you can’t make it work?” “What if you’re not good enough?” “What if you fail?” “What will people say?” “What makes you think you can do it?” “Who do you think you are?” “What if you don’t earn enough to pay the bills?” etc.

Why do we focus on the ‘negative’ and not the ‘positive’?

Now I know that by focusing on the negative, this is just my primitive brain on the lookout for me. Back in primitive times there were lots of dangers around. Man and woman had to be on their guard and be cautious to enable them to survive from one day to the next.  In our modern world we are rarely in mortal danger and operating from our primitive mind is not necessary anymore. But we do have a negative bias when thinking and this means our default setting is to think negatively.

All this negative thinking can slow us down, makes us anticipate the worst and then we create fear and worry, therefore change never happens. Life continues on in the way it did before and our dreams fall to the wayside.

What can we do?

I see many clients who come to me wanting to make changes in their lives and then they do so. So I decided to follow my own advice.

When opportunity came and knocked on my door, I welcomed it in! I know that if I want to grow, both as a person and in my business, I have to start pushing out of my comfort zone and this is my first step.

I have set goals I want to achieve and I am working on them.

I am taking small, actionable steps that I can achieve daily.

I am taking control of that little voice, of that ‘shitty committee’.

I am reframing my thoughts using positive words.

I am visualising things going well, giving my mind a goal, a direction to focus on.

In conclusion……Believe!

If we believe in ourselves we open our minds to all kinds of possibilities. We all have that potential within us. We have all the strengths and resources we need within us. We all have the ability and capability to be the person we want to be. It’s just that sometimes our ability to become that person, becomes hidden under a veil of negativity.  We just need to believe.

When my clients tell me in our sessions that they feel much more like themselves – happier, more self assured, more confident, more motivated, more focused, more positive it makes me so happy. It’s why I love what I do. And the good news is that the ability to change is always there; it’s about unlocking it, believing in yourself and being the best you can be.

Solution focused hypnotherapy has helped me enormously to believe in myself, to take control and follow a path that I am passionate about, that I believe I am destined for.

So, yes, for me it is time to make that change, to look forward and to move forwards.
